FOR Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna, Spring Summer 2016 is once again all about innovative and quality textiles. One highlight from their SS16 collection would have to be their exceptionally smooth and lightweight Pelle Tessuta leather accessories range.

Customers can shop the brand’s iconic loafers, contemporary sneakers, or, among others, business bags, the whole made of extremely thin strips of leather that constitute a special woven nappa which gives it this familiar uniqueness representative of the brand’s creations.

Tom Ford Beauty has done it again by creating the most exciting colour range featuring shades for eyes, lips and face – only this time, it has drawn inspiration from the Tom Ford SS16 runway video.

TOM FORD SS16 RUNWAY SHADE AND ILLUMINATE

Shade and Illuminate Palette

For lips, Patent Finish Lip Colour is an innovation, combining a lip stain with an ultra-glossy finish, and amazingly for a long-lasting lip colour which feels hydrating. It’s bold and beautiful, and it comes in eight magnificent berry last-all-day-shades, each delivering a vibrant slick of colour with long lasting shine.

For eyes, High Definition Eyeliner produces a sleek, precise stroke within a retractable pencil, in a choice of six long-lasting shades. So soft, you can wear above the lashes for daytime or below the eye for maximum definition.

The Cream Colour for Eyes is a smooth shadow, which illuminates and enhances. It comes in a choice of eight ultra-pigmented metallic shades covering a spectrum of colours from cool hues of blue and green, to warmer tones of brown and taupe, which all glide on effortlessly without a single crease or smudge in sight.

TOM FORD SS16 RUNWAY SIREN BLUE

Finally, two products in a natural hue. A Lip Colour Shine in a soft nude, which conditions and moisturises, in addition to conditioning the lips, giving a minimal veil of colour, incorporating a high shine. The Shade and Illuminate palette in Lavish Pink is a duet of sheer lightweight highlighting and shading creams that makes the process of contouring and sculpting remarkably simple.

“Amey Martin is a mix of excellent quality, natural leather, handmade exclusively in France, with contemporary touches,” say Jean Baptiste Amey and Kitesy Martin, the designers behind the young handbag label, when asked to describe its concept.

Building on the foundations of a truly Parisian aesthetic, as Paris is its home, the brand adds a futuristic aspect to its designs, for example a metal chunky shoulder strap accompanying each of their bags, in order to construct the future of this traditional aesthetic and explore new possibilities.

“As every old leather house, such as Hermès or Goyard, were really innovative and prescriptive at their beginnings, in terms of design, it was really important for us to work this way too. It is the job of luxury fashion houses to always offer innovation in terms of design and technics,” they explain. And that is what they plan to do season after season following their growing success since their launch in March 2015.

Meeting two years ago while working on rebuilding another luxury label, Amey and Martin clicked instantly and eventually decided to start their own brand together as they felt there was a gap in the market. They find working side by side challenging but very inspiring at the same time as they’ve decided not to split the work between them but do everything together: “It’s really stimulating to work on the design part as a duo. Generally we have the same universes in head, but sometimes we mix our references, our passion and our ideas.”

For their SS16 collection, the main inspiration was the ocean and Luc Besson’s 1988 film Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue) starring Jean Reno and Rosanna Arquette, centred around deep-sea diving. “We grew up with that movie. Each shot in the film is very inspiring in terms of colours, shapes and lines. We were fascinated by this universe of deep-sea diving,” the designers recall.

Therefore it’s no surprise that neoprene and rubber are the main materials used in the SS16 collection, along with ethically sourced high quality leather and python in bright colours, as well as a sophisticated textured black version which proved to be popular with their clientele.

“It is important for us to work with tanneries [where the skins are processed] that care about ethics – with the treatment of animals being raised – and about the environment. We select each skin together. The leather must have a natural touch. When you manipulate an Amey Martin handbag it’s a true sensory experience.”

Glass sits down with the London-based designer and RCA graduate Kitty Joseph to talk tactile textiles, sumptuous sunsets and how to make it as a young creative.

Integrating nature and the cityscape in her designs, Kitty Joseph’s eponymous line echoes the skylines of London in fine crystal pleats, grid-like mesh and quilting and watercolour ombré stripes. Cleverly using 3D techniques, she plays with light and dark, adding unexpected depth and spectrum to her bright colours. This combined with clean-cut, accessible shapes, as in the quilted blue bomber from her SS16 collection, culminating in the perfect example of a staple statement.

How has your background in textiles contributed to your aesthetic as a fashion designer?
It has meant that I approach everything from a very different angle, which I suppose is refreshing in a way – that is the response I get from people. I spend such a huge amount of time each season looking at colour, putting together ideas for prints and really developing them before I come to ideas for silhouettes.

I think my work is kind of unusual in that way. I would say that being a fashion designer who is also a print designer I am not buying prints of someones else, the prints are more like a handwriting, the DNA of the brand. It is about the prints and textiles really singing, they tell you what to do, where to go.

A look from Kitty Joseph’s SS16 collectionA look from Kitty Joseph’s SS16 collection

Your last collection was inspired by London sunsets – could you tell us more about that and what inspires you as a designer?
I’m lucky enough to have a space up on a roof terrace in Bermondsey and I’ve got a really great view of the sky, the Shard, and at the end of the day I like to just escape up there with my sketchbook. I draw a lot with pastels, I’ve got this range of old Sennelier pastels, french pastels, and they come in the most beautiful colours. It’s a real treat to go to an art shop and just pick up some extra colours. I just play and draw and record the effect of light and colours changing in the sky – it is this ongoing obsession for me.

Observing colour and nature in that way is really important to me. Last season I stuck all my drawings up on the wall of London and Bermondsey and just took colours directly from the palette. The soft, pastel stripes they came from the drawings I did from these strange layers of cloud, with a subtle change of colour across the layers. The print developed from that simple idea, these bands of light.

What’s really interesting when you record the light in the city is that you have this combination of artificial light, pollution, the reflections of big buildings, the light of the sky, and all sorts of things that make this really unusual light and colour.

A look from Kitty Joseph’s SS16 collectionA look from Kitty Joseph’s SS16 collection

You are very popular in the Asian market, why do you think that is?
From my third season I had a following – it wasn’t necessarily planned, but I think it might be something to do with my bold approach to colour. In Hong Kong and mainland China, people are not afraid of colour and experiment more with it. My accessories as well are really popular, as a more playful, fun way of wearing the brand.

A look from Kitty Joseph’s SS16 collection

I’m sure it’s been quite a journey from your graduating collection till now. Would you have any advice to young designers breaking through?
I trained in textiles so I had to learn a lot of things, not only how to set up a business, but also how to design clothing as well as prints. I would say, being at college is a really important time to work out who you are and distill that down to create your personality as a designer. That’s really important – this industry is saturated with graduates starting out.

When you start a brand you do have to listen to your buyers to refine your product – you start by creating things and then you just have to see what sells and let that inform you while staying true to your vision. It’s essential that you enjoy what you do – you can see it in the work that you love it!

Collaborations are a great way to get into the industry, I did a collaboration with Absolut Vodka, it was a real colour project and a good way to bring revenue in, when starting a new brand. Consultancy and teaching are also good ways to expand your network and horizon, to keep growing your business.

Having mentors, friends and a support network is so important – getting advice from other people helped me avoid their mistakes. You are not going to know everything at the beginning, so try to surround yourself with good people help you along. London is competitive, but it is quite a unique place in the way that there is a community if people wanting to help each other.

Following his return to footwear last year, the award-winning Canadian-born shoe-designer Patrick Cox launches his much anticipated SS16 collection for Lathbridge. Glass has a preview of what customers can expect from the returning designer, famous for his cutting-edge designs in men’s and women’s footwear.

The new Lathbridge collection recognises the past by referencing his classic style and the recent revival of the seventies, through colourful, floral patterns and the themes of disco. Not to be missed are the Velcro strapped high-tops embellished with square mirrored studs.

Cox is a famous alumni of the prestigious Cordwainers College, London where he studied during the 1980s, before going onto work with Vivienne Westwood. Guaranteeing a product as English as the bulldog logo itself.

Launching his own eponymous label in 1986, it wasn’t until 1994 that Cox changed the landscape of footwear design. This revolution came through the launch of his Wannabee range, including his most famous design – the square-toe Wannabe Loafer.

Patrick Cox Lathbridge Bulldog Loafer

True to the season, the SS16 collection features the classic Cox loafer, slip-ons and high top sneakers, dressed with a beautiful blooming and almost nostalgic feeling floral design. A nod to the brands logo and English heritage is also given through the implement of a brass bulldog motif upon the tongue of the specially named ‘Bulldog Loafer’.

Perhaps the biggest triumph of the collection is the “patchwork boot” available with matching accessories. Discover the journey a simple goatskin hide takes from being coloured in vegetable dye in Tuscany, to being hand-cut and sewn together in India, resulting in a shoe as original and unique as Cox himself.

Saab had a simplistic, natural colour palette for the most part with hints of florals, giving the entire collection a garden like feel. It’s the sweet dresses you could spend hours twirling in and a few comfortable looking trouser ensembles that still have an elegant touch. The whole thing feels like a desert oasis.

ELIESABCOT

ELIESAABCOT6

The fabrics used felt a bit sturdier than the usual Saab choices. There are still classic chiffons but paired with heavier beading, thicker organza materials, some lace, but everything is dripping in sparkle. Not over the top, but just to add a nicer sheen to the garments.

There’s still a lot of the light flowiness Saab tends to produce, but all that embellishment needs a slightly sturdier base to grip onto. It’s a stunning couture collection for your next Oscar visit.

Gaultier seemed to be channelling a mix of his costumes in the 5th Element while also adding a dash of Blade Runner. The clothing had something of a futuristic edge and the same time keeping a 1980s rock chic vibe. The collection included some modestly coloured pantsuits, daring high-waisted trousers with only a pair of braces covering the model’s upper torso, and a number of waist-defining under-bust corsets.

The show felt like an 80s rock concert and would easily slip its way into any Disney villain’s closet but it still felt like fashion. It was fun, edgy, bold and of course beautiful to watch. Yet again, Gaultier has the future of the fashion world in the palm of his hands.

Starring a line-up of models-cum-aspiring screen actors that include Millie Brady, Julia Garner, Matilda Lutz and India Salvor Menuez the new campaign was created in New York at the start of December in Meisel’s studio, with sole focus remaining upon garments, handbags and boots from the SS16 collection.

The muted setting of the images allows the collection, described as a study in extreme contrasts: tweed, jacquard, gingham, satin and lace and leather in complex textural compositions featuring diverse forms and colourways, to take centre stage.

As for the personalities taking centre stage in the new campaign, each model also boasts an illustrious list of screen credits to their name, such as the British star of ITV’s Mr Selfridge Millie Brady, soon to appear in Burr Steers forthcoming film Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, and New Yorker Julia Garner, who has recently been seen starring alongside veteran comedy actor Lily Tomlin in the film Grandma.

Keeping the Italian end up, actor Matilda Lutz has also recently been casted in the lead role of Paramount’s newest installment of The Ring, to be released in April. Each actor was encouraged to “confront” the camera by Meisel, allowing them to interact with it in a manner that highlights both their expressive range and beauty.

Including Sassen as a part of the ongoing creative partnerships between Tomas Maier, Bottega Veneta Creative Director, and renowned visual artists, the Italian luxury goods brand have aimed to capture the spirit of women’s and men’s S/S 2016.

Describing the latest collection that has brought about the new collaboration as a tribute to outdoor life and natural surroundings where colours in nature emerge with energy and individualism the campaign has been shot at the Jardin d’email by Jean Dubuffet, the sculpture gardens of the Kroller-Muller museum in Otterlo, Netherlands. The models photographed for the new campaign include Mica Arganaraz and Sven de Vries, who were directed by Sassen to perform sculptural poses and work their bodies into striking and unusual positions.

In addition, Sassen, who joins the list of celebrated photographers that have previously shot a Bottega campaign such as Nan Goldin, Pieter Hugo and Juergen Teller, was also influenced by childhood experiences reaching back to her upbringing in Kenya. For this campaign this ranged from exceptional people, colours and the extraordinary contrast of light and darkness.

Of the collaboration with Sassen, Tomas Maier has commented “you can’t help but be drawn to her images, her atmospheres and the distinct sense of mystery she creates.  I admire her bold experimentation and how she breaks the rules yet never loses her balance”.
