I REACH down to scoop up a handful of freshly formed ice, rubbing my hands together to lower my heart rate before raising them to the sun. I stand beside the glassy, frozen-solid Lago Nambino, 1,780m above sea level, having hiked through pristine snow to reach this breathtaking spot.

Encircled by the beauty of the snow-capped Brenta Dolomites, a Unesco World Heritage site, and the Adamello-Presanella Alps, I take a deep breath of crisp alpine air. The dazzling winter sunlight reflects off the snow, casting a magical glow over the landscape. In this moment of perfect solitude, I feel utterly at peace.

I am here to experience the newly launched Yin-Yang Active and Balance three-day programme, created by the Lefay Spa Method Scientific Committee at Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti, a spectacular retreat perched above the village of Pinzolo, Italy – a two-hour drive from Verona, the nearest international airport.

Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti exterior

In traditional Chinese medicine, yin and yang represent opposing yet connected forces – coolness and water versus warmth and fire. For the body to achieve optimal health, these elements must be in balance. Lefay’s wellness philosophy embraces this principle with treatments focused on harmonising these energies, with the Active and Balance programme thoughtfully curated to complement these elements.

My morning itinerary begins with a three-hour guided mountain hike through undulating, snow-draped terrain led by two expert local guides, Andrea Chesi and Mirko Ferrari. Afternoons are dedicated to indulgence and restoration within Lefay’s award-winning three-storey spa, featuring a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western wellness traditions. These include saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas, and three stunning pools that feature a lap pool and a warm indoor/outdoor infinity pool offering uninterrupted alpine vistas.

My spa journey begins with the water element as I immerse myself in a deeply restorative salt bath, followed by a mud wrap and a detoxifying, exfoliating massage on a waterbed. My highly skilled and nurturing therapist, Katarina, effortlessly blends gentle preening with invigorating pressure, leaving me both refreshed and cocooned.

Family Suite

On my second day, the fire element takes precedence. After a morning hike, I indulge in a deeply rejuvenating muscle massage, followed by a sauna stretching session, a unique Lefay therapy. As fragrant essential oils infuse the steamy air, Enrico, the intuitive in-house personal trainer, guides me through mindful breathing and slow, deliberate stretches to release built-up tension. This experience, both meditative and reviving, will benefit my body long after my departure.

The resort is also a gastronomic destination. Its fine-dining restaurant, Grual, was recently awarded a Michelin star, celebrating its commitment to sustainability and exquisite flavours, with the menu crafted from locally sourced organic and sustainable ingredients.

Pool

Evenings at Dolomia, the resort’s main restaurant, are the ultimate celebration after Lefay’s rejuvenating daily schedules. The healthy dining option offers a selection that aligns specifically with the Active and Balance programme, but the allure of decadence on the main menu might prove irresistible. I surrender to the temptation of tortelli filled with locally produced Casolét cheese, saffron cream, caper powder and cocoa beans – a dish that lingers long after the last bite.

Lobby

Returning to my Lefay suite adds another facet of serenity to my stay. Each room is designed in soothing neutral tones, featuring glass and leather, with wooden accents and at a touch of a button, I ignite my stylish “log fire”, casting a warm glow. The marble bathroom, with its standalone bathtub and bespoke Lefay amenities, enhances the sense of indulgence. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a balcony, where panoramic mountain vistas form a dramatic backdrop to the village below.

As my time at Lefay draws to an end, I already feel the pull to return. And with any luck, I will – very soon.

THE 17-square-mile volcanic island of Ischia in Italy had long been a place I could describe with such familiarity that I often had to remind myself I had yet to visit it. My affinity for it was entirely inspired by my favourite book, My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, the first in the renowned Neapolitan Novels quartet, where the protagonist, Elena, paints such a vivid and evocative portrait of the island that one is transported there within a single sentence.

San Montano Resort & Spa

Panorama path

Ischia’s reputation has flourished in no small part due to the success of Ferrante’s novels, which have since been adapted for television, film and theatre. For Elena, the island represents an escape and, upon visiting, I found it served much the same purpose for me.

With its turquoise waters, verdant slopes and rugged coastline, Ischia is a sanctuary of natural beauty and adventure. Famed for its thermal spas, sun-drenched beaches and rustic cuisine, the island offers pockets of refined luxury, among which the San Montano Resort & Spa stands as one of the most distinguished.

Lobby

Perched majestically atop a hill, 108m above sea level to be exact, this exquisite five-star hotel commands breathtaking views over the serene Bay of San Montano and the expansive Gulf of Naples. Nestled within a lush Mediterranean garden, it enjoys an unrivalled position on the promontory of Monte Vico, setting it apart from the grandeur often associated with large resorts.

Sea Water Pool

Rather than imposing itself upon the landscape, the hotel reveals itself gradually, a secret to be uncovered. You meander down flower-lined steps, pass beneath graceful arches nestled among fragrant lemon groves, or gaze down from the hotel’s highest vantage point, where breakfast is served against a panorama of endless blue. This enchanting setting cultivates an atmosphere of seclusion and exclusivity that few resorts of its calibre can match.

Thermal Water Main Pool

The resort is a sanctuary of wellness and indulgence, featuring a natural sauna, 11 outdoor thermal pools, an indoor pool, a state-of-the-art wellness centre, fully equipped gyms, manicured gardens and four restaurants. Accommodation ranges from seven luxurious suites to a selection of elegant villas and 65 rooms.

The interiors pay homage to the surrounding landscape – reflected in a palette of gleaming white, framed by vibrant blue, yellow and green tiling. Subtle maritime accents nod to the island’s seafaring heritage, seamlessly blending elegance with a deep sense of place.

Franco’s Restaurant

The resort’s culinary philosophy, “from land to hand”, is exemplified by its commitment to locally sourced ingredients, particularly in its exceptional wine selection. The attentive staff can point to the very vineyard from which your wine originated, visible from your dining table. Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining: for lunch, the poolside Acropoli Bar and Franco’s Restaurant serve freshly caught seafood, crisp salads and pizzas baked in a traditional wood-fired oven.

As evening falls, La Veranda offers a refined taste of Ischian and southern Italian cuisine. For those wishing to explore beyond the resort, a short walk or complimentary shuttle ride leads to the charming, cobbled streets of Lacco Ameno, where acclaimed restaurants such as O’Pignattello serve exquisite tasting menus celebrating the island’s rich gastronomic heritage.

La Veranda

From the rejuvenating hydrotherapy and thermal pools overlooking Negombo Bay to the Ocean Blu Spa – the first and only spa on the island with an uninterrupted view of the Ischian Sea –San Montano Resort & Spa is a masterclass in harmonising architecture with nature’s splendour.

This is a place that transcends the pages of Elena Ferrante’s novels, a haven where luxury meets literature, and where every moment feels like an escape into a timeless Mediterranean dream.

AS THE world slowly starts to turn balmy and the warm summer days creep in, we immediately turn to the sunnier side of the globe to dream of our next escape.

If your plans for the break include hours lounging in the midst of nature, watching historical horizons with a cherry infusion in hand, and soaking up the sun over the weekend, we might just have the place for you. Meet The Rome EDITION, a sophisticated celebration of Italy’s free-spirited and elegant essence, brought to life by the innovative team behind this gem.

The Rome EDITION

Nestled in a timeless 1940s building—formerly occupied by one of the main Italian banks—the structure is a striking example of the rationalist style and was created by Cesare Pascoletti in collaboration with the revered architect Marcello Piacentini.

The hotel embodies the spirit of acquaintances gathering to dream up the perfect escape. The stunning central staircase of cipollino marble from the quarries of Apuane is testament to their creative genius. Original features are retained throughout, including the central courtyards and original statues and lamps.

What’s more, as you step inside, you’ll be enveloped by a design that seamlessly merges poise with contemporary elegance. Its interiors feature airy comfort, blending clean lines (the towering ceiling makes for a compelling architecture), warm natural furnishings in wood, and custom details to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages lingering and connection. The ample rooms and suits boats sweeping views from the centre of the city, offering a placid retreat after a day of exploration.

The Terrace

Conceived by the great mind and entrepreneur, Ian Schrager, while interpreted by the hotel owners Statuto Group, the intimate 93-room Rome EDITION sets a new standard in the country’s capital. Its sophistication, refinement, and high design aesthetic makes it a meeting place for Romans and global travellers alike.

Positioned in one of the most covetable areas of Rome, the hotel is only a few short steps from Via Veneto, the most sought-after street of the country. But there’s more to the story: all major attractions are within easy reach, including the Monti streets, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia, the Spanish Steps, the famed Trevi Fountain and the wondrous Borghese Gardens.

The Rome EDITION

Rome’s profound food culture is celebrated with great care in the hotelìs culinary offering, which aims to pay homage to the city’s culinary heritage while adhering to the local and international tastes that permeate the capital. Anima, the signature restaurant at The Rome EDITION, celebrates the core of Italian dining with bold flavours inspired by Rome and Naples, curated by Chef Antonio Gentile and created from seasonal, high-quality produce.

The Rome EDITION

The restaurant focuses on using fresh, seasonal ingredients to create dishes with incredible flavours, including the likes of tagliolini all’amatriciana or carbonara, Mediterranean sea clams, and white shrimp to name a few. There is a heavy emphasis on wines from Italy and other countries, and the offering has a heavy focus on culinary pairings. The light-filled restaurant with chartreuse and blue upholstered furniture is open for breakfast, lunch, late lunch and dinner.

Anima’s sheer brilliance lies in its sophistication and elegance, inviting its guests to be allured by refined design aesthetics and attention to details.

Dishes on The Roof

The restaurant also features an expansive garden that serves as both a piazza and dining space, comprising over 400 plants and a cascade of climbing plants over the façade. A dramatic bronze metal awning overlooks teak wood banquettes and free-standing furniture along with an Italianate arrangement of lanterns to give it the feel of a traditional Roman garden.

Weekly aperitivos are available at Anima for guests and locals to come together and enjoy. A wide selection of wines and drinks are available including the signature Cardinale, a gin based cocktail, and small plates such as mozzarella and raw ham, praline of beef Genovese and skewer or roasted octopus.

The Roof is located on the seventh floor offering unobstructed views across the city skyline and landmarks. It features a travertine plunge pool surrounded by daybeds and a large bar area. Here, guests can enjoy a lunch menu featuring small plates such as the Focaccia with mozzarella and tomatoes, Tacos filled with raw white fish and avocado cream and Fried squid and shrimp served with a vegetable pickled salad and soy mayonnaise.

The Punch Room

Located on the ground floor, two unique bars set the benchmark for mixology in the city: Punch Room and Jade Bar. The Punch Room, EDITION’s signature bar concept, is an award-winning speakeasy-inspired bar concept that follows the standard set at other EDITION properties worldwide.

Born in the 17th century, traditional punches utilised the exciting new ingredients discovered on the trade routes, the five traditional ingredients of punch highlighted spirits from Europe and also spices and citrus from Africa and the east, teas from China and India, and sugar from the Indies. Taking inspiration from traditional recipes, Punch Room puts a modern spin on the drink.

In a place where every day feels like a carefree occasion, what more could one ask for? All in all, it’s a serene retreat from the urban hustle, enveloped by a wealth of undiscovered little treasures awaiting exploration.

ITALY in summer always seems like a good idea. But while many holiday goers flock to the well-trodden paths of the Amalfi Coast or Tuscany, Calabria remains blissfully under the radar.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Lamezia Terme airport lies Capo Vaticano. Tucked away on Italy’s coastline and surrounded by historical sites of interest, vibrant wildlife, and white sandy beaches, Capo Vaticano is one of Calabria’s most attractive destinations.

Capovaticano Resort

For those seeking a base from which to experience this beautiful area, Capovaticano Resort Thalasso SPA delivers in both location and style. Shining a light on the region’s idyllic landscape, Capovaticano Resort Thalasso SPA boasts uninterrupted vistas of azure seas and distant Aeolian islands. Set a few minutes away from the city centre of Tropea, the hotel features 123 rooms, a Thalassotherapy centre and spa, two restaurants, two tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, a five-a-side football pitch, and a sun terrace.

In terms of dining destinations, the hotel’s two restaurants are distinct, yet both exude an undeniable elegance and Italian charm. Firstly, Il Mantineo is where guests flock for an expansive breakfast buffet or, later in the day, a refined dinner. The menu utilises locally sourced ingredients to create sustainable, authentic Calabrian culinary delights.

Capovaticano Resort

Meanwhile, Lo Stromboli is the hotel’s sun-drenched lunch spot, situated right next to the sea. Here, guests can enjoy traditional Mediterranean cuisine with “one foot in the water”. On a clear day, one can wine and dine whilst enjoying views of the Stromboli volcano in the distance.

The scenery at Capovaticano Resort Thalasso SPA is more than just a pretty backdrop – it’s shaped by strong geological forces. Geography enthusiasts may be interested to know that the region is home to two other significant volcanoes – Mount Etna and Marsili Seamount.

Together, these three peaks contribute to the region’s lush flora and fauna, creating a delicate volcanic microclimate. As such, Calabria’s natural wildlife is hard to ignore. Think: house martins fluttering from tree to tree, bougainvillea flowers adorning every sidewalk, and bergamot orchards scattered across endless hills.  Surrounded by such natural beauty, it’s hard not to breathe a little deeper. The nature here forces you to slow down and detox from stress.

If the landscape doesn’t encourage relaxation enough, the hotel’s spa is certain to purge the excess stress. Featuring three pools, a tub with hot/cold Kneipp path, a steam room, a sauna, and much more, the spa utilises seawater to encourage holistic wellbeing. A highlight from the spa menu is Capovaticano’s Silk Ritual – an 80-minute massage that harnesses the soothing power of Calabrian silk gloves and cocoons.

Capovaticano Resort

The treatment draws upon the region’s rich history, highlighting the significance of Calabrian silk. Once considered a European capital of silk production, Calabria continues to showcase the powerful properties of the natural fibre through garments, fabric production, and now wellness. Silk possesses powerful anti-ageing and regenerating properties due to sericin, a natural polymer, resulting in soft, dewy skin.

Capovaticano Resort

If a spa treatment doesn’t quite alleviate any aches and pains, the hotel also offers yoga classes. Weather-permitting, all classes are conducted outdoors in the hotel’s beautiful garden space, allowing one to practise shavasana in style while enjoying the sea air.

For energising activities outside of the hotel’s walls, a trip to Tropea is a must. There are few areas in Calabria more beautiful than Tropea. Having been voted the most beautiful village in Italy in 2021, Tropea is a great place to dive into independent cafés and gelaterias.

While there, it’s worth trying to get your hands on anything featuring Cipolla Rossa di Tropea – the region’s reputable sweet onion. The idea of a sweet onion may cause you some concern. But fear not. This root vegetable is subtle in its sweetness, appearing in all forms of cuisine from traditional hot meals to ice creams, salads, and more.

For those eager to explore more of Calabria, Capovaticano Resort Thalasso SPA isn’t the only hotel managed by Mediterranean Hospitality. Also in Tropea is Villa Paola – a 16th-century family-owned hotel. As an adults-only retreat, this property serves as a wonderful hideaway for couples and those desiring a more tranquil escape. Villa Paola is also home to De’Minimi – a sophisticated restaurant featuring dishes inspired by aromatic herbs, locally grown tomatoes, and Tropea sweet onions.

For families with young children, another hotel option, Baia del Sole Resort, may be a preferred destination. This hotel lies on the Tyrrhenian coast between Tropea and Capo Vaticano and sets the stage for children to uncover the joys of the Italian countryside. The Kids Club welcomes those aged from 3 to 15 years old and offers playful activities such as tennis, water sports, dance, and photography lessons, meaning little ones will be happily engaged whilst parents can enjoy their pastries in peace.

Capovaticano Resort

In summary, Capo Vaticano and the wider Calabrian coast offer an Italian escape unlike any other. So, the next time Italy calls, perhaps skip the crowds and head south to where the volcanoes sleep, the sea sparkles, and the bergamot blooms.

WHERE does one start when attempting to describe a city like Rome? From the brutal history of the Colosseum, to the ethereal tomb of St Peter and inside Vatican City, Rome truly tells the stories of human history like nowhere else on earth.

And when visiting such a city, it is only fitting to stay at a hotel with its own impressive history. Although built in the 16th century, Hotel d’Inghilterra came into being in 1845 and soon became known as ‘The English Hotel’ thanks to its famous English guests, most notably the poets Keats, Byron and Shelley. Later it would become a favourite with stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck and Ernest Hemingway, to name just a few.

Hotel d’Inghilterra Roma exterior

Junior Suite

The opulence of the hotel and attentive service makes even the ordinary traveller feel like a celebrity. The décor and furnishings are in rich, classical hues, old paintings adorn the walls and chandeliers sparkle from the ceilings.

There’s objets d’art and antique furniture but there’s also a cosiness owing to the hotel’s boutique size. One has the feeling of being a private guest in a very beautiful home. The staff welcome you as if you have been staying there for years. And the rooms are so beautiful and thoughtfully laid out that you can feel the personal touch applied to each of them.

In the restaurant, Cafè Romano, Executive Chef Andrea Sangiuliano serves his own unique take on Italian and Mediterranean classics using seasonal ingredients. Bold new creations like amberjack carpaccio marinated in negroni cocktail sit alongside famous traditional Roman dishes like carbonara.

Cafè Romano is also where breakfast is served to enjoy freshly baked pastries, perfectly poached eggs benedict and the best coffee in Rome.

Hotel d’Inghilterra Roma Living Room

The hotel is within walking distance of all of the city’s most famous sights, including the Trevi fountain – immortalised in Fellini’s iconic film La Dolce Vita, the Spanish Steps – which featured prominently in Hollywood blockbuster The Talented Mr Ripley, and, most magnificent of all, the Colosseum.

Whether you are staying in the former suite of a Hollywood star or visiting a famous movie backdrop, one cannot help but feel the magic of the eternal city.

ITALY IS undoubtedly one of the best destinations for skiing holidays, and few places do it better than Valle d’Aosta.

Nestled in the northwest of the country, the region lies surrounded by the towering peaks of Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. Home to some of Italy’s most glamorous and prestigious resorts, recognised for miles of picturesque slopes and a variety of off-piste entertainment, it made a name for itself as a top winter destination.

Montana Lodge & Spa at La Thuile

We arrive at La Thuile, a peaceful resort perched at 1,500 meters above sea level, bordering France, only a 90 minute drive from Turin airport. With an impressive 150 km of cross-border slopes, it’s an unbeatable heaven for skiers. The town itself is quaint and unhurried, dotted only with a few charming shops selling the essentials and local cheese and wine.

Our hotel, Montana Lodge & Spa, part of Italian group R Collection, is the perfect hideaway and the only five-star property in La Thuile making it a favoured meeting spot in the area. Offering bright and early mornings on the slopes, you can expect first class treatment in the afternoon choosing from long, tranquil evenings by the fire with an aperitivo, dinner in a glass-walled Bistrò Alpino, or relaxing at the Erre Spa – particularly in the outdoor hot tub with a sunset backdrop.

Erre Spa at Montana Lodge

In the morning, my rental equipment is waiting in the ski room. The sky is flawless, and Christiano, the hotel’s events manager, hands me sunscreen with a knowing smile. A quick five-minute shuttle ride later, we’re at the gondola, ready for our Alpine adventure. La Thuile has something for everyone.

Gentle forest trails for beginners, thrilling red and black runs for the fearless. As we ascend, someone warns not to end up on Pista 3 Franco Berthod – Italy’s beast of a slope with a terrifying 73% incline, which I quickly mark on my map with “avoid” in capital letters.

Bistrò Alpino at Montana Lodge

After a few hours of carving through the snow (and avoiding wrong turns), we gather at Lo Ratrak, basking in the sun with other skiers. The feast begins – cured meats, nutty Fontina cheese, and the region’s beloved polenta concia, drenched in cheese and butter. Topped with venison ragu or wild mushrooms, it’s the mountain meal which aims to fuel you for an entire day – or makes you want a nap in the sun.

Montana Lodge & Spa

The following morning starts with a thrill – a helicopter ride from Montana Lodge to Grand Hotel Courmayeur, another one of the R Collection properties. Part of the “Fly the Alps” package, the experience lets guests split their stay between two luxury resorts, making the most of and exploring both skiing destinations.

Soaring over villages and between towering peaks at sunrise is pure magic. We touch down just meters from the hotel’s restaurant, making an unexpected spectacle for diners enjoying their breakfast as we stumble out of the helicopter trying to sneak in a picture.

Grand Hotel Courmayeur

The hotel’s floor to ceiling glass walls frame picturesque mountain views, as we sip our cappuccinos, seamlessly blending modern design with the snowy landscape. Grand Hotel Courmayeur, the only luxury property outside the city centre, offers a peaceful escape just a short walk from the business of Via Roma.

Inside, natural wood, soft lighting, and chic neutral tones strike a perfect balance of elegance and comfort. With the spa for unwinding and fantastic massages, so needed after a day on the slopes, and incredible ravioli at La Fourchette, hotel’s restaurant, it radiates Alpine luxury.

La Fourchette at Grand Hotel Courmayeur

Unlike La Thuile’s tranquil charm, Courmayeur exudes an air of exclusivity. Known for its pristine slopes, dramatic Alpine scenery, luxury shopping, and lively après-ski scene. Despite having only, in comparison, around 40 kilometres of ski routes – I quickly find out it’s impossible to get bored with a variety of routes meandering through the forests.

Popular for its freeride opportunities, due to its high altitude and abundance of fresh snow, off-piste thrill-seekers head straight for the glacier – providing us with a great spectacle of carving through untouched powder, whilst we sip our Aperols at Christiania Ice Bar perfectly content.

Beyond skiing, Courmayeur isn’t short on activities. The Skyway Monte Bianco takes us up to 3466 meters above sea level, where we take in jaw-dropping glacier views, watch skiers glide through the sky, and stroll through the snowy park. We are being told that on calm days, there is an opportunity of taking a five kilometre cable car ride taking you straight to Chamonix – a perfect way to explore nearby resorts on the other side of the border for more adventurous souls.

Grand Hotel Courmayeur

Grand Hotel Courmayeur

A short drive away, a family-run Les Crêtes winery is another highlight of the region. During the exclusive tasting we have a chance to try the local wines: from the crisp and floral Petit Arvine (I immediately grab two bottles) to the bolder, fruity Nebbiolo, as well as eat our body weight in delicious local cheeses and meats – experiencing Aosta from inside out.

In the evening we visit another hidden gem: La Grolla, a family-owned restaurant tucked away in the mountain forest. The visit starts before we walk through the front door, as the only way to get to La Grolla is via a snowmobile ride under the moonlit sky. The food is hearty starring the local produce – rabbit ragu pasta, boar tortellini and polenta taragna finished with tiramisu or affogato. Pure indulgence.

Grand Hotel Courmayeur

Whether carving through fresh powder, sipping wine overlooking ancient vineyards, or ending the day with a fireside aperitivo, Aosta offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. And with the ease of getting there, I know this won’t be my last time in this part of the Alps.

LAKE Como has been the go-to destination for the elite of the political and arts spheres for centuries. Its beauty has inspired works from composers like Liszt and Verdi (the latter composed his famous opera, La Traviata, while staying there), and the likes of Wordsworth, Byron and Shelley referred to their enchantment with the lake in poems and novels. The stunning villas that line its shores have even provided the backdrop for such famous film franchises as Star Wars and James Bond

The lake is lined with ancient towns and villages that have retained every ounce of their historical charm. We based ourselves in the rustic town of Bellagio, where tiny cobbled streets house miniscule greengrocers, restaurants and artisanal producers, packed like sardines in the small, steep area of land between the shore of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

The streets are so narrow in places that, from the traditional apartment buildings, one can lean out of one’s window and shake hands with the neighbour in the building opposite. Here it feels like time has stood still as you sit in the small town square sipping espresso, eating cannelloni and listening to the church bells.

The swimming pool

Bellagio is also home to the oldest and most renowned hotel on the lake, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, which, for 150 years, has been welcoming some of the world’s most famous names including Sir Winston Churchill, President Roosevelt, the Rothschilds, JF Kennedy, Mary Pickford, Clark Gable and Al Pacino.

In 1918 the hotel was bought by Swiss hotelier Franz Joseph Bucher and it is thanks purely to its Swiss owners and the protection offered by the Swiss government that the property was spared the looting that other prestigious buildings in the area suffered during Nazi occupation.

It still holds the impeccably preserved interiors and furniture from its opening in 1873 and boasts feats of artisanal skills, including rare French trompe l’oeil painting styles and Venetian Murano chandeliers. Stepping inside is truly like stepping into a bygone glamorous era. The hotel is still owned and run by the Bucher family, who can be seen every day around the property.

Lunch at Mistral restaurant

The hotel has long been renowned for its cuisine and executive chef Ettore Bocchia, widely considered the father of Italian molecular cuisine has been at the helm of its gastronomic restaurant, Mistral, for 20 years. During this time he has pioneered techniques and flavours that are now copied the world over.

Bocchia developed a method for making ice cream within minutes in front of guests using liquid nitrogen – this is certainly one of the show-stopper dishes at the restaurant. But it is his unique understanding of flavours that has made Mistral one of the most celebrated restaurants in the region.

There is also the slightly more relaxed restaurant, La Goletta, which offers traditional regional cuisine in a stylish, family-friendly setting. Not to be missed is the incredibly fresh fish from the lake – of which both restaurants have a stunning view.

The Queen of Sweden suite

The hotel’s spa features an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, separate kids’ indoor pool, a relaxation room and luxurious treatment rooms. The spa therapists use only products by Italian brand MEI whose stringent adherence to natural therapeutic ingredients means that that they are all made from wild-grown, organic medicinal herbs.

The best thing to do while at the hotel is to have no agenda whatsoever but to relax and indulge. Soaking in the magnificent views with one (or two) of the hotel’s outstanding cocktails, partaking in wild swimming in the lake and the incredible cuisine were the highlights of our stay. At this hotel one can truly indulge in la dolce vita.

DESPITE being a renowned destination for some summer sun, Lake Como’s unparalleled beauty continues to shine even through the colder months. An ethereal wintery wonderland appears as mist descends upon the picturesque landscape and frost blankets the delicate foliage. Enter Villa d’Este – a luxurious hotel on Lake Como’s shores, surrounded by 25 acres of park space.

Two years ago, Villa d’Este remained open for Christmas and New Year for the first time. Due to its remarkable success, the hotel will continue to welcome guests over the 2024 holiday season.

Villa d’Este

In celebration of this event, Villa d’Este has curated a special festive menu of experiences to usher in the jolly tidings. To start, the innovative French skincare brand Biologique Recherche Beauty Maison will host a winter pop-up. Villa Malakoff will transform into a magical lakeside spa sanctuary, offering an exclusive 90-minute signature facial treatment—the Soin Magistral—until January 6th, 2025.

Villa d’Este Spa

Meanwhile, the hotel’s resident club and bar will transform into an elegant jazz Club in partnership with Milan’s iconic Blue Note jazz club. Every Friday night from now until December 27th, guests can soak up the bar’s speakeasy atmosphere while enjoying new curated cocktails such as the Jazz Club—a mezcal-based beverage with smoky notes—and the Note Dolci—a refreshing gin drink featuring amaretti and dessert wine.

On a similar note, two glass houses have been commissioned to extend the hotel’s Lake Terrace so guests can enjoy magnificent views of Lake Como while remaining cosy indoors from November onwards.

The first—located outside Bar Canova—will offer aperitifs and cocktails alongside an all-day dining menu, caviar selection, and live music. The second glass house—connected to Sala Colonne—will be the ultimate location for a glamorous afternoon tea. For further sweetness, the decadent halls of Sala Colonne will convert into an artisanal haute patisserie, chocolatier, and sweet shop.

Villa d’Este Dining

For those looking for a delightful gastronomic experience, the hotel will host two immersive beverage-orientated dinners throughout December. On the 4th of December, guests can enjoy an evening with Oliver Krug, representing his prestigious Krug label. Then, on the 18th of December, the dinners will conclude with a meal centred around the iconic Domaine de Romanée-Conti.

And the culinary delights don’t stop there. The hotel has crafted a Christmas Eve Dinner menu and a Christmas Day lunch offering. In a celebration of Italian culinary traditions and local specialities, the two menus intertwine holiday traditions with contemporary flair.

Finally, on the 31st of December, guests can welcome the New Year during Villa d’Este’s New Year’s Eve Gala – complete with a grand firework display over the lake – or with the hotel’s New Year’s Day Brunch, which promises to be a wonderful way to usher in the New Year.

TUSCANY has always called to me, but it’s the southern part of the region—the Maremma—that holds something more.

Less polished, more raw, this corner of Italy feels untouched by time. It’s as though the land here moves to a slower, quieter rhythm. At the heart of it lies L’Andana, a former Medici villa tucked in the rolling hills just a short drive from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

L’Andana

Arriving at L’Andana feels like stepping into a living painting. The landscape stretches out in lush green waves, dotted with ancient olive trees. The air is different here—crisp and clear, inviting you to take a deep breath and savour the moment. The villa itself, once a retreat for Grand Duke Leopold II and his court, still holds that sense of history. But now, it offers something subtler—a luxury that feels less like a hotel and more like a friend’s private estate.

L’Andana

The weekend begins with a quiet cycle through the estate’s vineyard. The vintage bike, the gravel paths, and the golden light cast by the setting sun make it feel like time has slowed. On this 500-hectare property, the world outside feels distant, even nonexistent.

As I ride deeper into the land, I pass La Scuderia—an elegant four-bedroom villa built in the former stables. Its beauty is secluded, almost secret. The views here, of rolling hills and distant peaks, are breathtaking, but it’s the silence that leaves the strongest impression. There’s something meditative in the stillness.

After a relaxed lunch at La Villa, the hotel’s more casual restaurant, I make my way to the ESPA spa. The treatments are exactly what I need—restorative, subtle, and soothing. The vitality pool eases my muscles, while the tranquil environment wraps around me like a gentle embrace. Soft music, the scent of lavender and citrus, and the quiet hum of the space make it easy to lose track of time. But the garden calls me next.

L’Andana

The spa’s surrounding garden feels like a dream—wild yet perfectly curated. Fragrant roses spill over stone walls, while ancient cypress trees cast long shadows over manicured lawns. It’s an oasis of calm, a place to stop and breathe, or simply admire the beauty in its quiet, fleeting form.

Dinner that evening is a celebration of Tuscany’s finest produce. At La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini, each dish is a masterpiece: creamy burrata, and slow-cooked meats, all infused with the essence of the land. The atmosphere is understated, yet elegant, a perfect extension of the surrounding beauty—intimate, refined, and comfortable.

L’Andana

As the weekend draws to a close, I take one last stroll through the estate. L’Andana has a way of anchoring you in the present, while quietly whispering the stories of the past. With its blend of natural beauty, timeless elegance, and authentic Tuscan spirit, it’s no wonder the Italians themselves consider this a hidden gem.

Unpretentious, yet sophisticated; secluded, yet indulgent. As I prepare to leave, there’s a sense of reluctance. But I know I’ll return. Tuscany has a way of capturing the heart—and L’Andana embodies that magic perfectly.

by Adina Ilie

L’Andana, Tuscany, offers double rooms from €440 per night based on two sharing, including breakfast. You can book your stay at www.andana.it

SICILY, the largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean, is home to two glossy Rocco Forte properties.

The island’s capital, located in the northwest, is Palermo, a spicy fusion of African and Arabic cultures offering a destination rich in history and cultural treasures, including the Palermo Cathedral and the Massimo Theatre, as featured in the film The Godfather. With its impressive gastronomic delights, world-class wines and year-round sun-drenched landscape, the island ensures an indulgent holiday.

Villa Igiea

One of the smartest addresses in the city is Villa Igiea, an historical Art Nouveau palazzo and once the summer home to Sicily’s influential Florio family. After a two-year restoration overseen by Olga Polizzi, sister of Sir Rocco Forte, who collaborated with architects Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen, an uber-luxurious urban retreat has been created.

The entrance is awash with cosy armchairs and colourful floral installations, with a winding marble staircase leading down and out onto the grounds. Perched above the port with panoramic vistas across the Bay of Palermo, we look out over the clutch of mega yachts that are moored in the harbour, while lounging by the swimming pool surrounded by the immaculately manicured tiered gardens.

Igiea Terrazza Bar

Our bright suite is reminiscent of a private apartment, blending historic features with contemporary comforts, and our hi-tech, spacious living area is adorned with local objects d’art and book-lined shelves. Picture windows open out to dazzling views over the lush gardens and across the turquoise Mediterranean.

The separate bedroom with a zillion-count linen thread ensures a blissful slumber, and the Carrera marble bathroom is complete with Sicilian floor tiles and shelves lined with plenty of fragrant Irene Forte skincare amenities.

Suite at Villa Igiea with Sea View

The outside terrace of the Florio Restaurant serves an unrivaled Sicilian breakfast buffet, while at night the garden’s soft lighting and enchanting live music transform it into a fine dining haven, with a sumptuous menu designed by chef Fulvio Pierangelini, featuring fresh fish, hearty pasta, Sicilian arancini and many ingredients harvested from the gardens of the Rocco Forte resorts.

After absorbing the vibrancy of Palermo, we’re whizzed off in a Maserati Ghibli on a 90-minute scenic drive heading south towards the serenity of Rocco Forte’s Verdura Resort. With 203 sea-facing rustic-toned rooms and suites set within 230 hectares of grounds, it boasts 2km of private golden coastline encompassing a water sports centre and two spectacular, world-class 18-hole championship golf courses that meander from the foothills of the surrounding mountains down towards the sea.

Not forgetting to mention probably the largest two-tiered swimming pool we have ever seen (all 60m of it), tennis courts, a fitness centre and a stand-alone spa with four outdoor thalassotherapy pools heated at varying temperatures that look out onto the grounds. For families, there’s a kids and a teens club.

Verdura Resort Infinity Pool

Verdura Resort takes pride in its diverse selection of restaurants. Before dinner, we head up to the Granita Bar to witness the famed Sicilian sunset over the sea, which creates an enviable Instagram moment.

We dine at Amare, the romantic beach-fronted seafood eatery, with its selection of freshly caught fish, perfectly cooked to order. We book the more casual Liola Restaurant for our second night, which offers cliff-top views over the Mediterranean. This Sicilian trattoria-style pizzeria menu includes Sicilian caponata and large plates of hearty homemade pastas.

Rocco Forte Private Villa

Last year, the resort built 20 self-contained spacious villas, perched high with views overlooking the sea and offering total privacy. Each villa has been styled to resemble a rugged, double-storied Sicilian farmhouse and offers immaculately appointed interiors with contemporary furnishings in rich, earthy colour-tones, and specced with every mod-con imaginable.

All comprise a range of luxury amenities, including their own indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a fully equipped kitchen, heated swimming pool and electric bikes to navigate the resort’s grounds – that’s if guests can tear themselves away and head down to the resort to experience all this resplendent retreat has to offer.

ITALY in summer is like florals in spring, classic, timeless and somewhat inevitable. But hidden in the valleys of Piedmont lies Nordelaia, an independent boutique hotel that exudes luxury in a way that is difficult to find elsewhere.

With only 12 guest rooms and situated on five hectares of agricultural land, I arrived surrounded by undulating 360-views of vineyards and with the feeling that I had found a sanctuary that offered the best of Italy but without the chaotic buzz of tourism.

Views of Montferrat Valley from Nordelaia

Opening its doors in 2021 after a three-year restoration by British design studio These White Walls and the help of Tunesi Studio Genova, the 800-year-old farmhouse has retained its original flare while debuting as an intimate retreat from city life.

Infinity pool

With a new three-tiered building opposite for dining, drinks and events, the hotel has managed to keep its rural touch. Its distinct stripped-back interior mixes natural stone brushings and rustic woods with large windows that allow for constant natural light and expose the unmatched views.

Semi de Girasole – Superior Suite

Staying in the Black Suite, a room with a living area centred around semi-circular windows that allow you to experience sunrise to sunset, I was taken aback by, not only its vast space, but also its modern loft design.

Each of the rooms and suites are individually designed with a different aesthetic that utilises local craftsmanship, so highlighting the country’s heritage. Although there are differences in interiors, the connecting thread is the absence of television in keeping with the hotel’s wish for guests to take a moment to detox digitally.

Resident Chef Charles Pearce and team

Taking full advantage of Nordelaia’s focus on wellbeing, I visited the spa equipped with a sauna, steam room, hammam and Kneipp pools but opted for the more leisurely choice of a full-body massage.

For me, Nordelaia’s standout feature is its infinity pool overlooking the wine country and backgrounded by a spacious, immaculately trimmed garden boasting hammocks, sunbeds and a hidden bar. There is no such thing as an empty glass – staff are so attentive that they know what you need before you do, for me that usually being another Aperol Spritz. And with a guestlist so small, you feel more like you’re in a private villa than a hotel.

LORTO restaurant

Nordelaia’s fine dining restaurant, LORTO, did not disappoint – this is Italy after all. After reading a legion of top-tier reviews, my expectation for this four-course meal was set very high. Conceptually spearheaded by Andrea Ribaldone and brought to life by Resident Head Chef Charles Pearce, the mainly plant-based menu respects its country’s culinary traditions whilst utilising Nordelaia’s own seasonal vegetable garden.

Whilst locals are known to indulge in more meat heavy dishes, LORTO maintains a unique stance on showcasing vegetables and fish – with a particular favourite of mine the Grilled Octopus with chickpea cream and roasted carrots.

Dishes at LORTO

Nordelaia is a spot for those in the know. Not necessarily a secret escape but certainly a destination for those looking for ‘dolce far niente’ – the sweetness of doing nothing.

By Imogen Clark

Room rates at Nordelaia start from €205 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis
