MEXICO – vast, vibrant and endlessly diverse – is the largest Spanish speaking country in the world and home to 130 million people. We arrive on a direct flight from London, excited to explore three distinctive landscapes spread across this mesmerising nation through the lens of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

Cabo San Lucas: Coastal glamour

Our journey begins at the newly opened Four Seasons Resort and Residences Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol. A glamorous yet laid-back retreat with 96 guestrooms and suites on the Baja California Peninsula’s golden corridor, this resort offers year-round sunshine and is a perfect destination for a winter vacation. Visiting between November and April offers the magical bonus of humpback whale sightings arriving from Arctic waters, which can be viewed directly from our ocean-facing patio.

Four Seasons Cabo San Lucas Ocean Front Villa

Each morning gently unfolds, commencing with barefoot beach walks and dips in our heated plunge pool, or simply relaxing on the sun loungers within the privacy of our suite. Afternoons bring us choices: a round of golf at the adjacent Cabo Del Sol golf course, indulgent spa rituals, guided mountain bike rides, sculpture or art classes in the dedicated studio, or peaceful hours spent at the spa’s adults-only ocean-view pool (where the chilled drinks and healthy bites on offer are the only interruptions).

Dining at this Four Seasons resort is always a highlight, from the outstanding Cayao – Richard Sandoval’s Japanese-Peruvian fusion signature restaurant – to Caraluz, a casual beachfront Mexican eatery that becomes our lunchtime favourite.

Four Seasons Cabo San Lucas Spa Pool

Mercado, the on-site market set within the Mexican-inspired cobblestone square and its vibrant bursts of Jacaranda blossoms, ensures the opportunity to order fresh coffee, cold-pressed juices and grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, as well as to browse the resort’s not-to-be-missed boutiques.

Tamarindo: Jungle seclusion

Our next destination is Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, an expansive and secluded hideaway retreat set within sub-tropical jungle spread across a 3,000-acre private reserve on Mexico’s Pacific coast. We’re immediately captivated by the panoramic vista from the clifftop 300 feet above the sea. Every detail of this resort exudes refinement, including the exemplary service from all of the immaculately trained staff, most of whom hail from the local village.

Four Seasons Tamarindo

Our spacious suite’s interior echoes the surrounding palette of the resort – taupe, brown and ocean blue accents – with accessories and coffee table books adding an authentic Mexican touch. Our bathroom is a marble sanctuary, complete with an indoor-outdoor shower and a sunken stone tub, framed by a picture window. Morning coffee arrives, timed perfectly to view the sunrise shimmering across the bay below us, which we follow with laps in our own private 35-feet pool – the most idyllic way to start the day without leaving our suite.

We experience our first paddle boarding class with personal guide George, who successfully gets us standing up. Later we partake in a uniquely transformative Mexican temazcal ceremony at the resort’s spa – a traditional two-hour spiritual ritual dating back to pre-Hispanic times held in a steamy domed sweat lodge and led by a professional temazcalero. This was the most spiritual experience we’ve ever undergone on a vacation anywhere on the planet and we depart feeling peacefully enlightened.

Four Seasons Tamarindo view

Sustainability runs deep here. At Rancho Lola, the resort’s working farm, we savour a Mexican breakfast al fresco one morning, serenaded by Mexican music.  From vegetables, livestock, flowers and free-range eggs, this is a perfect showcase of farm-to-table living.

Dining options range from Coyul, curated by celebrated Mexican chef Elena Reygadas, to Sal, the beachfront gem featuring fresh catches of the day and where we toast the sunset over the freshest tuna and pillow-soft house-made mash – one of the best meals of our stay.

Mexico City: Urban elegance

Our final stay is at the elegant Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, an urban sanctuary wrapped around a courtyard with a water fountain. The recently renovated interiors feature Pan Dulce, a coffee shop offering pastries and snacks, alongside curated boutiques showcasing stylish, locally sourced items. This leads the way to the star attraction: the legendary Fifty Mils bar. A favourite among discerning locals and international jetsetters, it’s currently ranked among the world’s top 50 bars and is an essential stop during any stay in the metropolis.

Four Seasons Mexico City

The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the city, being adjacent to Chapultepec Park, home to the Chapultepec Zoo and nine of the city’s museums, including the outstanding, not to be missed Museum of Anthropology (note: all museums are closed on Monday).

The city’s upmarket neighbourhoods are also in close proximity – from Polanco with its world-class designer shopping and Roma and its trendy art scene to Condesa, renowned for Art Deco buildings and café culture. After an evening dip in the hotel’s rooftop pool, which is adjacent to the 24-hour gym, we head for dinner at the impeccable Il Becco, the hotel’s spectacular Italian fine-dining restaurant, a destination in itself with a separate street entrance.

Our journey through Mexico with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts provides a harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion and unparalleled luxury. From the sun-kissed beaches of Cabo San Lucas to the lush jungles of Tamarindo, and finally the vibrant beating-heart of Mexico City, each destination provides us with unforgettable memories that will remain in our hearts long after our last drop of duty free tequila.

I REACH down to scoop up a handful of freshly formed ice, rubbing my hands together to lower my heart rate before raising them to the sun. I stand beside the glassy, frozen-solid Lago Nambino, 1,780m above sea level, having hiked through pristine snow to reach this breathtaking spot.

Encircled by the beauty of the snow-capped Brenta Dolomites, a Unesco World Heritage site, and the Adamello-Presanella Alps, I take a deep breath of crisp alpine air. The dazzling winter sunlight reflects off the snow, casting a magical glow over the landscape. In this moment of perfect solitude, I feel utterly at peace.

I am here to experience the newly launched Yin-Yang Active and Balance three-day programme, created by the Lefay Spa Method Scientific Committee at Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti, a spectacular retreat perched above the village of Pinzolo, Italy – a two-hour drive from Verona, the nearest international airport.

Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti exterior

In traditional Chinese medicine, yin and yang represent opposing yet connected forces – coolness and water versus warmth and fire. For the body to achieve optimal health, these elements must be in balance. Lefay’s wellness philosophy embraces this principle with treatments focused on harmonising these energies, with the Active and Balance programme thoughtfully curated to complement these elements.

My morning itinerary begins with a three-hour guided mountain hike through undulating, snow-draped terrain led by two expert local guides, Andrea Chesi and Mirko Ferrari. Afternoons are dedicated to indulgence and restoration within Lefay’s award-winning three-storey spa, featuring a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western wellness traditions. These include saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas, and three stunning pools that feature a lap pool and a warm indoor/outdoor infinity pool offering uninterrupted alpine vistas.

My spa journey begins with the water element as I immerse myself in a deeply restorative salt bath, followed by a mud wrap and a detoxifying, exfoliating massage on a waterbed. My highly skilled and nurturing therapist, Katarina, effortlessly blends gentle preening with invigorating pressure, leaving me both refreshed and cocooned.

Family Suite

On my second day, the fire element takes precedence. After a morning hike, I indulge in a deeply rejuvenating muscle massage, followed by a sauna stretching session, a unique Lefay therapy. As fragrant essential oils infuse the steamy air, Enrico, the intuitive in-house personal trainer, guides me through mindful breathing and slow, deliberate stretches to release built-up tension. This experience, both meditative and reviving, will benefit my body long after my departure.

The resort is also a gastronomic destination. Its fine-dining restaurant, Grual, was recently awarded a Michelin star, celebrating its commitment to sustainability and exquisite flavours, with the menu crafted from locally sourced organic and sustainable ingredients.

Pool

Evenings at Dolomia, the resort’s main restaurant, are the ultimate celebration after Lefay’s rejuvenating daily schedules. The healthy dining option offers a selection that aligns specifically with the Active and Balance programme, but the allure of decadence on the main menu might prove irresistible. I surrender to the temptation of tortelli filled with locally produced Casolét cheese, saffron cream, caper powder and cocoa beans – a dish that lingers long after the last bite.

Lobby

Returning to my Lefay suite adds another facet of serenity to my stay. Each room is designed in soothing neutral tones, featuring glass and leather, with wooden accents and at a touch of a button, I ignite my stylish “log fire”, casting a warm glow. The marble bathroom, with its standalone bathtub and bespoke Lefay amenities, enhances the sense of indulgence. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a balcony, where panoramic mountain vistas form a dramatic backdrop to the village below.

As my time at Lefay draws to an end, I already feel the pull to return. And with any luck, I will – very soon.

TENERIFE, 200 miles off Morocco’s west coast and the most visited of the Canary Islands, is the largest and most populous isle in the Macaronesian archipelago. Boasting a year-round temperate climate, it is the ultimate destination for escaping the European long winters, with just a four-hour flight. Tenerife offers sunny days by the pool or beach and balmy evenings dining al fresco that rejuvenate the body and the soul.

Our trip begins and ends at The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife Abama, a striking terracotta-hued resort perched on a dramatic cliffside. This luxurious oasis exudes sophistication, with its marble-clad interiors bathed in sunlight streaming through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows.

Located just 30 minutes from Tenerife-South Airport, the hotel is surrounded by lush, manicured gardens and the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. At the heart of the property lies the Citadel, the resort’s hub, designed as a Moorish-inspired village.

Beach

Club Lounge

Descending from the Citadel, we arrive at The Retreat, an enclave within the resort and our home throughout our stay here. The Retreat includes 144 recently redesigned rooms and suites split across four separate levels, with each Retreat level boasting its own expansive lagoon-style swimming pool, fringed by tropical foliage and serviced by attentive staff offering complimentary poolside drinks and snacks.

For those seeking the ultimate in privacy, select a villa with its own private pool to create an intimate sanctuary.

Retreat Pool

Our spacious suite is decorated in a soothing neutral palette with earthy-toned accents and comfy furnishings utilising organic fabrics, and it opens out onto a veranda furnished with sun loungers with Atlantic views, from where we savour unforgettable sunsets each evening.

The suite’s king-sized bed ensures restful nights, while our opulent marble bathroom, complete with a walk-in shower, a sunken bathtub, double vanity unit adorned with Diptyque amenities, adds an extra layer of indulgence.

Villa Club – 1 Bedroom Suite, Ocean View

The Beach Club

Each morning we head to breakfast at The Club. This cliffside dining spot is adjacent to the Retreat’s infinity pool accompanied by stunning ocean vistas across to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. Breakfast is a feast of fresh fruits, artisan cheeses, charcuterie and pastries, with made-to-order eggs from the à la carte menu.

Complimentary light lunches, snacks and drinks are also served at The Club throughout the day for Retreat guests, perfect for leisurely afternoons by the pool. We love exploring the expansive grounds on foot, while many guests hire their own gold buggy. Alternatively, just call for a shuttle-ride to any point within the resort.

The resort offers direct access to its own secluded beach, serviced by attentive staff and adorned with squishy sun loungers and oversized umbrellas offering plenty of shade. For those wishing to spend all day by the sea, there’s the Beach Club restaurant serving up fresh fish, salads and light bites. For those less inclined to take the steep winding pathway down to the beach, there’s a charming “train” service to transport guests throughout the day.

El Mirador

Families are well catered for, with numerous kids-only pools across the main hotel complex, while the award-winning Ritz-Kids Club offers activities for children aged 4-12. For a dose of wellness, we head to the Spa Abama with its thoughtfully curated menu of treatments featuring ESPA products and indigenous oils. The Roman-inspired thermal circuit is the ideal way to unwind after a day in the sun. Meanwhile, golf enthusiasts will love the resort’s pristine 18-hole championship course.

Club Lounge

The property boasts an extensive choice of nine distinct restaurants, headlined by the two Michelin-starred M.B – helmed by chef Erlantz Gorostiza – where every dish is a symphony of flavours from Catalan. For a laid-back vibe, Verde Mar offers vibrant vegetable-forward dishes, enhanced with herbs from the resort’s vertical gardens.

Diners seeking fresh seafood should pre-book at El Mirador, where oceanfront tables and cozy heaters set the scene for an unforgettable night – the salt-crusted sea bass is a stand-out. At Verona, the resort’s trattoria, the menu features wholesome comfort food, from creamy aubergine parmigiana to decadent cheese-laden pizzas and scrumptious gelato.

From sumptuous accommodation and world-class dining to family-friendly amenities and a private beach club, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama delivers the essence of a luxurious winter escape. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Tenerife’s natural beauty, this resort is a destination to return to time and time again.

LE Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, a Belmond hotel set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, promises more than a luxurious escape — it is a celebration of culinary artistry.

With world-renowned chef Raymond Blanc at the helm, this two-Michelin-starred restaurant is set within a honey-hued manor house that exudes charm and elegance. Surrounded by 27 acres of manicured gardens in the idyllic village of Great Milton, it is recognized as one of the UK’s most iconic gastronomic destinations.

Exterior of Le Manoir

Le Manoir also holds the distinction of being home to the UK’s first Michelin-star kitchen with its very own dedicated cookery school — a true testament to its pioneering spirit. This summer, the estate plays host to a series of immersive experiences designed to engage the senses and elevate the appreciation for the art of fine food.

Le Manoir Garden Green House

Among the highlights is Grow, Cook, Eat, a unique fusion of the Raymond Blanc Cookery School and Gardening School. This hands-on course guides guests through the process of cultivating their own produce — from sowing seeds to harvesting vegetables — before turning their bounty into exquisite seasonal dishes under expert guidance. It’s a soulful, sensory journey from soil to plate.

Provence Suite

For true connoisseurs, Four Hands Lunch offers a rare gastronomic affair: an extraordinary collaboration between Raymond Blanc and fellow French maestro, three-Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno. This exclusive culinary encounter blends their shared respect for French cuisine with masterful innovation, creating an unforgettable dining experience.

Provence Suite

I am staying in my own retreat withina ground-floor suite, Provence, inspired by Raymond Blanc’s travels throughout the South of France. With its secluded garden — perfect for a romantic aperitif — the suite captures rustic elegance at its finest. Exposed wooden beams, floral drapes with lavender accents revealing floor-to-ceiling windows, invite the outdoors in.

An open fireplace adds warmth and intimacy especially during the cooler months, while a large dining table sets the scene for a leisurely in-room breakfast. Double doors lead to the elevated spacious bedroom, complete with marble bathroom with sunken bath, separate shower and a walk-in dressing room. Every detail, from the décor to the atmosphere, whispers romance and French charm.

Raymond Blanc and Yannick Alleno

As evening falls, I wander across the estate to the dining room — home to the only British restaurant to hold two Michelin stars for over 30 consecutive years. Dinner, complimented by supreme service, comprises of a sublime seven-course tasting menu, a culinary revelation: slow, deliberate, and indulgent. It is here, in this extraordinarily lavish setting, that I begin to truly appreciate the pinnacle of culinary excellence.

Raymond Blanc Cookery School

Le Manoir is more than just a destination. It is a place where memories are made, where wishes are granted, and where dreams, really do, come true.

NEPAL is a landlocked Himalayan nation between China and India, where towering mountains and a rich cultural heritage converge. It’s home to the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, at 29000 feet and eight of the world’s 10 tallest mountains.

This captivating country transitioned 16 years ago from one of the world’s most storied monarchies to a democratic republic, but retaining its distinctiveness in several unique ways. One of Nepal’s most captivating cultural traditions is the worship of the living goddess, Kumari, a young girl who is revered as a deity until she reaches puberty.

She has daily audiences in her Kathmandu palace with the public, where tourists can gain a glimpse of her. Other interesting facts about Nepal include being the only country in the world with a 15-minute time offset relative to its neighbouring countries, and also being the only nation with a non-rectangular national flag (depicting mountain peaks).

Swimmng pool at Dwarika’s Hotel

In Kathmandu we are staying at the palatial Dwarika’s Hotel, a heritage property showcasing Nepalese craftsmanship and resembling a museum rather than a luxury hotel with its 13th century artefacts and multiple courtyards.

It dates back to 1952 when the founder, Dwarika Das Shrestha, began rescuing ornate wooden carvings from ancient buildings. He purchased land to store and display these artefacts, eventually creating the eponymous boutique hotel, which opened its doors to guests in 1977.

Krishnarpan Nepali Restaurant at Dwarika’s Hotel

The property, which continues to play host to a line-up of international royalty and celebrities, comprises 80 spacious and authentically designed rooms and suites. Each is a testament to Nepal’s creative history, featuring beamed ceilings, custom-made dark-wood furnishings, shiny terracotta tiled floors and hand-woven upholstery.

This family-run hotel offers three restaurants with most of the food supplied by the Dwarika’s local organic farms. Toran, the all-day dining eatery with an international menu where we enjoy an al-fresco breakfast in the tree-filled courtyard; Mako’s, the spot for Japanese fare; and the highly acclaimed Krishnarpan serving the finest Nepalese cuisine in Kathmandu.

A two-hour drive takes us to the laid-back sister property, Dwarika’s Resort, an all-suite wellness mountain-side retreat offering spectacular views of Kathmandu Valley. Mornings kick off with a mountain-top yoga session under the sunrise, followed by a hearty al fresco breakfast.

Afternoons are spent with the highly qualified Ayurvedic doctor offering advice on how to work towards a more holistic approach to life. We learn how to balance our mind and body and to discover what type of diet suits our specific body types and physiological needs.

Dwarika’s Resort bedroom suite

The charming guru Sivaraman teaches us how breathing therapy can help us in our everyday lives and he guides us on a range of breathing exercises. On our final evening, we head to the Pancha Kosha Himalayan Spa passing trees with affirmation inscriptions, an indication of the spirituality resonating throughout the resort. The indulgent massage with scented lemongrass oil soothes our muscles and calms our souls, just in time for pre-dinner drinks at the highest spot at the resort, Gol Lok Dham Lounge, where we enjoy panoramic views of the sun slowly setting over the Himalayas.

During our time in Nepal we discover a country where ancient traditions seamlessly blend with a tranquil lifestyle. From the bustling colourful streets of Kathmandu to the serene verdant tranquillity of the Himalayan foothills, this country guarantees a unique adventure exploring its natural wonders and its rich cultural tapestry.

WE’VE embarked on a sun-soaked voyage on the Mediterranean aboard Silversea’s newest jewel, Silver Ray. During our glorious seven-day cruise, we will anchor in three countries while exploring some of the most glamorous destinations in southern Europe.

This luxurious vessel, with a capacity of 728 guests, is the twin sister to the renowned Silver Nova and was launched last year to represent a revolutionary leap in cruise design.

Silver Ray

With its innovative asymmetrical layout, Silver Ray offers an expansive on-board experience, highlighted by a 45-foot swimming pool positioned to one side of Deck 10 and a hot tub on the Deck 11. The unique design choice creates ample space on deck for squishy sun loungers, shady cabanas and a stand-out poolside bar.

The panoramic glass-walled elevators allow light to flood in as we slip between the ship’s floors, while the decks’ glass panels on each floor offer unobstructed views of the breathtaking scenery and the cerulean blue sea. Silver Nova and Silver Ray are among the latest generation of sustainable ships, powered by a hybrid system of batteries and natural gas, and equipped to connect to shore power to minimise emissions while in port.

Silver Ray Pool Deck

Upon reaching our suite, we are warmly greeted by Rosie, our impeccably dressed Filipino butler. Her radiant smile and genuine welcome instantly makes us feel at home. Rosie (one of 34 expertly trained Silversea butlers on board) ensures our stay is seamless, assisting with the booking of complimentary inclusive excursions and confirming our reservations at the ship’s bookable restaurants.

Rosie also keeps our mini bar well-stocked with our favourite tipples and canapés, which we relish on our private veranda as the sun dips below the horizon every evening.

Silver Note

The suite is adorned in soft beige and turquoise hues, with ample storage and a walk-in closet, ensuring that our living space remains uncluttered and pristine. Our expansive marble bathroom is stocked with large refillable bottles of Silversea’s signature amenities, named after the extravagant on-board spa, Otium.

This sanctuary of wellness offers a wide spectrum of therapies, beauty treatments and tweakments. Our pre-breakfast morning routine commences with a treadmill session in the sea-facing fully equipped gym, followed by a chill-out in the steamy whirlpool.

The Marquee

Entertainment on cruise ships can often lean towards the predictable, but not on Silver Ray. We’re captivated by the talents of the affable Alfredo, the pianist who delights guests nightly with his repertoire of well-known melodies in Dolce Vita on Deck 5. The on-board cast of professional singers and dancers elevate our evenings in the two-storey Venetian theatre performing to a packed house.

Dining on the ship is a gastronomic event, with eight superb options to satisfy our every mood and palate. La Terrazza serves up a buffet breakfast and lunch, complemented by à la carte options, dining either indoors or alfresco on the deck. By night the venue transforms into a specialty Italian restaurant with a candlelit setting.

Our favourite spot for breakfast is The Marquee on Deck 10, where we relish a vitamin-packed juice and a light healthy meal while gazing out to sea. At night-time the restaurant transforms into an enchanting dimly-lit venue, serving sizzling steaks that we cook ourselves on lava rocks.

Dusk Bar

On our first evening, we enjoy evening drinks at the chic SALT Bar, where the mixologist crafts a unique cocktail for each voyage, after which we savour dinner at SALT Kitchen, where the daily menu reflects the culinary traditions of each port. SALT (an acronym for Sea And Land Taste) showcases dishes crafted from local recipes and ingredients, sourced by Silversea chefs who arrive ahead of the ship.

Atlantide offers an elevated dining experience with an international menu featuring delicacies, including Dover sole and Wagyu steak. Silver Note is a sultry dining venue with live jazz performances by a talented pianist and vocalist duo. The broad menu features a selection of delectable tapas-sized dishes that seem to flow endlessly from the dedicated kitchen.

On our final evening after dinner we head to the aft of the ship for a nightcap at the Dusk Bar, where we’re serenaded by the saxophonist, Chris. His soulful melodies are the perfect soundtrack to accompany us while sailing under the stars, reminiscing about our voyage and dreaming of our next Silversea adventure.

Silversea’s seven-day voyage from Monte Carlo to Civitavecchia (Rome) on board Silver Ray from July 15-22, 2025, starts from £4,200 per person for door-to-door service (including private executive airport transfers, international flights, food and beverage on board, butler service and shore excursions).

WE ARE standing atop Taktsang – better known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery – Bhutan’s cliff-clinging icon at 10,000 feet above sea level. Our steep three-hour trek up the pine-forested mountain was gruelling, even with our obligatory stop at the famous “halfway” café.

According to legend, the monastery was founded in the eighth century by Padmasambhava, the “Second Buddha”, who flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated here for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours.

This hike was the culmination of our Bhutanese adventure, having landed at Paro Airport a week earlier, with our plane banking left and right between the surrounding 18,000-foot peaks of Mount Jumolhari. Our pilot is one of only 24 in the world trained to land here.

We have come to explore the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, nestled between China and India, with a population of only 750,000 living in the valleys of a country that is 99 per cent mountainous. Buddhism, the official state religion, permeates every aspect of the Bhutanese lifestyle, culture and even attire, with men wearing the traditional Bhutanese gho and women wearing the kira.

Bhutan has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last 15 years, evolving from an absolute to a democratic monarchy, with the government monitoring the country’s prosperity through its “Gross National Happiness” index. The so-called GNH tracks the population’s mental well-being, education, cultural diversity, community spirit, sustainability and living standards.

On our one-hour drive from the airport to the capital, Thimphu, our guide explains the reason for the mandatory accompaniment of all international tourists. It’s to ensure reverence for Bhutanese religious sites, to show respect for national traditions and to protect the environment.

We check in at Pemako Thimphu, a striking hotel enveloped by the vista of the surrounding mountains. Its exterior features a traditional Bhutanese façade with whitewashed walls, intricate wooden cornices and lotus-shaped window frames. The resident Buddhist monk blesses us with a welcoming ceremony, tying a red thread around our wrists, symbolising good luck and prosperity, which we proudly wear for the duration of our trip.

We are perfectly located to explore this quaint city and viewing its distinctive architecture, with each building adorned with ornate colourful designs and religious symbols. We later discover that the Bhutanese style of architecture extends to all the country’s monuments, dzongs, temples and monasteries.

Thimphu is the place to purchase textiles and handicrafts, to indulge in Bhutanese cuisine and to mingle with the locals. We admire the theatrical moves of the white gloved traffic policeman in an impeccable uniform, standing in his signal box directing traffic at the city’s only roundabout. Intriguingly, there are no traffic lights anywhere in Bhutan.

Pemako Thimphu Lobby and Restaurant

A two-hour drive eastward across never-ending undulating valleys and verdant mountain peaks takes us to Punakha, the ancient capital city. We are staying at Como Uma Punakha, where our balcony overlooks the breadth of the riverine Punakha Valley. In the morning, we follow a trail to hike up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a modern monastery built in 2004 to ward off evil spirits and bring peace and harmony to all living things. Afterwards, we take a river raft to Punakha Dzong, a fortress monastery and one of Bhutan’s most revered sites.

After our descent from Tiger’s Nest near Paro, we head to our hotel, Amankora Paro, and its sultry Aman spa with its specially blended Aman amenities. We luxuriate in a traditional steamy hot stone bath, infused with rosemary, to ease our weary muscles. This pristine lodge, with its minimal aesthetic and incomparable service, offers unrestricted mealtimes serving Michelin-star worthy dishes, a help-yourself bar, daily cultural activities and a same-day laundry service.

We came to explore what makes this tiny Kingdom of Bhutan the happiest place on earth. We depart feeling privileged to have experienced the uniqueness of Bhutan’s traditional lifestyle and the sense the excitement for the King of Bhutan’s plan for the economic development of Gelephu in the more accessible south of the country, which will enable many more tourists to experience this happy Himalayan Kingdom in the near future.

THE acclaimed Ellerman House is set along the steep and winding Kloof Road within the swanky enclave of Bantry Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, and about a 10-minute drive from the V&A Waterfront.

Upon entering the gates of this grandiose former Cape Edwardian-style residence, it feels like we have entered into someone’s private home – it seems inappropriate to refer to this property as a hotel. The sheer scale of art on display is overwhelming, resembling a gallery rather than an extravagant hideaway.

Many original architectural features have been retained throughout, which allude to its historic ambience. Before we even check in, we’re greeted by the charming manager, Karien Bendle, and her front-of-house team as if we are old friends.

Garden and pool

The Ellerman art collection highlights the South African spirit, with priceless works by native legends such as Gregorie Boonzaairer, Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern lining every inch of the wooden-clad walls, while sculptures in various shapes and sizes are perched precariously on mantles and corner shelves.

There’s a separate, professionally-curated contemporary art gallery, with more than 1,000 pieces, which is renowned as the finest collection of African art on the continent. It is a privilege to experience this collection either on a guided tour or individually with an iPad. Art aficionados will have to stay at Ellerman to view this world class collection as the property is not open to the public.

View From Felix Studio

Ellerman House has a brag-worthy store of more than 9,500 South African wines. These comprise emerging and established labels from the Western Cape wine region, famous for its 350-year-old winemaking heritage.

Wine storage is enhanced with specially curated wine racks with a glass installation in the shape of a giant corkscrew taking centre stage within the wine gallery. This space is also home to an interactive, multi-media wine library and brandy-tasting lounge.

Bar Rock

Our exceptionally spacious suite is stocked with a complimentary mini-bar and a selection of delicious locally produced snacks (topped up daily). French doors lead out to an expansive ocean-facing terrace with panoramic coastal views across the numerous Atlantic bays of Cape Town, with Robben Island in the distance. It’s like a double-page spread from a glossy coffee table book. We leave our terrace door open at night, falling asleep to the calming sound of the waves breaking on the shore below.

Ellerman House presides over the one and a half acres of manicured grounds, and its sizeable swimming pool is flanked by green and white stripy sun loungers – the perfect secluded spot to soak up the balmy sunshine after a day exploring the buzzing beach-fronted city.

Bottom pool terrace

Service is discreet and you’re guaranteed to feel like this is your home-away-from-home, whether you’re staying in one of the 13 bedrooms in the main house or in one of two private villa residences, each with a private entrance. We love the quirky “naughty corner” walk-in pantry besides the kitchen, which is open 24 hours for luscious sweet and savoury treats, including jars stuffed with copious amounts of famed South African confectionary.

But the best treat is in the evenings heading to Bar Rock, with its famed South African craft gin trolley, to watch the sun set slowly over the tip of southern Africa.

I’VE arrived at the multi-award winning Chenot Palace to embark on the recently introduced Sleep Cycles, an optional module to its Recover & Energise programme.

In our fast-paced world where stress levels can soar very quickly, the value of quality sleep cannot be overstated. At the heart of Chenot’s Sleep Cycles module lies a profound understanding of sleep as a cornerstone of both physical and mental well-being that can be achieved with the balancing of our circadian rhythm.

Chenot Palace Weggis exterior at dusk

As I step onto my balcony and into the cool Swiss morning air, I take in the breathtaking vista that surrounds me. The tranquil turquoise waters of Lake Lucerne is framed by a row of palm trees, set against a backdrop of the freshly snow-capped Mount Rigi peaks. It’s a scene that epitomises the natural beauty of Switzerland.

I’m staying in one of the luxuriously appointed Sleep Suites which has been engineered to optimise sleep quality, with both the room temperature and the soundproofing calibrated. The king-sized bed is dressed in stark-white nanobionic linens, containing minerals activated by body heat that emit infra-red rays.

The bedside audio system is programmed with a selection of acoustic sensory experiences tailored to facilitate sleep. I review the sound menu and select the immersive ambiance of a tropical rainforest, which transports me to a world of serenity within minutes of my head touching my pre-chosen pillow.

Room with a view at Chenot Palace Weggis

A pivotal element of the Recover & Energise programme are daily neuro-acoustic deep relaxation sessions held in a silent and darkened room. Headphones deliver specific neurochemical and auditory signals to the brain, which induce a state of calmness facilitating a deep slumber. This is followed by 30 minutes of photo-biomodulation treatment that bathes me in a therapeutic infrared light, engineered to promote cellular metabolism and reduce inflammation. There’s a comforting warmth that envelopes my entire body and immediately elevates my mood.

At the core of each of Chenot’s holistic programmes is a sophisticated bio-energetic screening process supported by a medical assessment (including body composition), conducted by world-renowned specialist doctors using high-tech medical equipment. It provides invaluable insights into the functioning of my vital organs and my overall body wellness, which delivers a personalised roadmap for the development of my health.

Pool at Chenot Palace Weggis. Photography credit Fabrice Fouillet

My daily Chenot schedule includes indulging in a steamy hydrotherapy bath to dilate the veins and to eliminate toxins, a mud wrap to create a sweat followed by a hydro-jet shower to cleanse the skin and raise blood pressure followed by a heavenly energetic lymphatic drainage full-body massage. I note that as the week progresses, my body feels energised, better than it has felt in a long time, and I feel rejuvenated as never before.

Whole Body Photobiomodulation

Each meal at Chenot is served by an immaculately attired team in the elegant dining room, where delicious, colourful and artistically presented low-calorie plant-based cuisine. Our daily regime, accompanied by copious amounts of water and herbal infusions, triggers a process called autophagy, whereby the body initiates a self-cleaning process to recycle and to discard damaged cells.

Thankfully, Chenot’s super talented Italian Executive Chef Ettore Moliteo has published a stunning cookery book, which will enable me to follow his recipes once I return home.

The programme menu at Chenot is not merely about temporary fixes or superficial treatments. It is a meticulously crafted journey towards holistic well-being, blending scientific precision in order to restore the energetic balance of the body. For those seeking to optimise their health and wellness, Chenot represents the ultimate experience. And for some, a better night’s sleep.
